Bamse , Jordanian Comic Strips , Kalle Anka , Beetle Bailey

I have worked as a freelance artist for Swedish children's comic book
Bamse - Världens Starkaste Björn, off and on since the year 2000. My first piece of Bamse art work was published in 2001, and Bamse has since then constituted the main bulk of my professional experience in the field of cartooning. One of the benefits of actually drawing as job is that you're required to produce A LOT of artwork. Making page after page forces you to become better at your craft, I think. Further, Bamse has a central place in my childhood heart, and therefore I'm very proud to be part of the making of it today. Swedes born in the 70s generally grew up with Bamse or Donald Duck, or both. Now this generation is entering parenthood and want its kids to have the same we had, probably one of the reasons Bamse still does well in retail. Except for Sweden, the comic book is sold in Norway and Finland. Here at my site you'll find a sample of panels that I drew, plus the revealing of how a Bamse-page comes into being, from doodle to finished page. If you're an aspiring comic artist, or just pure interested, be sure to check out the Doodle 2 Finished section!

I had a go at making Arab comic strips during my year of Arabic studies in Amman 2003/2004. The strips were made for the class magazine of the international language center; they satirize the experience of being a Western international student in an Arabic/Islamic country in general and in Jordan in particular. The teacher responsible for collecting material for the magazine managed to loose one of the strips, loose a photo of the artist (me) that was to be published alongside the text/comic, and in the end only two blurred low resolution panels from the first strip (and no photo!) were published. The teacher wasn't exactly my best friend after that.

In 2003 I was hired by Egmont to make the drawings for a Donald Duck display case for Egmont/Disney publications - my first ever professional Disney gig!

Relatively fresh as a freelance comic artist for Egmont, I got in touch with Alf Thorsjö, chief editor of Swedish comic book Knasen (
Beetle Bailey). He had this idea about producing Knasen strips locally in Sweden, and suggested I'd have a go at it. At this point he didn't know what Mort Walker and his team would think about such an idea. "Either they'll be enthusiastic out of their pants, or I'll get punched in the face", he told me. I made the strips, got paid, and never heard from Alf again. I wondered what happened to his face?
