8 bitar , Space Police Squad

8 Bitar - Jakten på Karnevalsbiljetten was the official computer game of
Lundakarnevalen 2006. I was contacted already in December 2005 by game boss Alfred Gunnarsson, who wondered if I was interested in being head of graphics. I said no, because I felt I had neither the experience nor time required, and preferred to contribute with nothing more than a few animated sprites. Gradually, however, I was lured into commitment, brainstorming, churning out ideas for mini games, co-writing the plot etc. Before I knew it I was in charge of character design and animation and eventually I became some sort of stylistic consultant, next to Alfred who was the official director, trying to influence the dynamic minds of the game developers to move in approximately the same direction. It has to be said that among all the talent working on the game there was only one true genius, and that was head of programming Björn Carlin. He was the guy who made the thousands of obscure pieces of the grand digital jigsaw puzzle that was the Carnival Game fit together. Dude, I wish I had his brain! At the art work-end of the project, I personally designed and animated all the sprites for the main characters, as well as a few others. The theme of the Carnival was "Dual", thus we decided midway through production to have two main characters, one male and one female. This meant double amount of work for me, but in the end I think it was worth it since it went so well with the theme. 8 Bitar is available for free download at the Lundakarnevalen website. You need to know Swedish to understand the game.

Space Police Squad was going to be a classic 2D platform game co-designed by me and Johan Peitz at
Freelunch Design. We envisioned it as a mix between Mega Man (lots and lots of gun-shooting action) and Lost Vikings (you would have to switch between characters with different skills to complete the levels). Unfortunately, university studies got in the way for the both of us and the project was shelved until further notice. A certain amount of work was produced however; you can see some of my pixel-animations for the game as well as some doodles here. The Space Police Squad concept stayed with me through the years. Sometimes I thought of adapting it to comic book format, as Space Police Academy. You can see some Space Police Academy drawings at the cartoons & illustrations section.
