Character design

When I design characters for a project, I hardly ever end up using the initial character skecthes. Well, come to think of it, I NEVER settle for the initial design. Here’s two cases of characters evolving from something to something else.

I designed this delivery man for an informercial we did for the Copenhagen municipality project Citylogistik.

The customer wanted something reminiscent of La Linea (Linus på linjen).

One of the most common forms of “critique” I get is that I draw too cute/too kiddie style. Funnily enough, this time the customer wanted it to be cuter and rounder. No problem! 🙂 So I ended up with:

You can watch the film here.

The second example is for another Copenhagen municipality project called Cykelsuperstier. The customer wanted “a simple cut-out style”.

I looked at Terry Gilliam’s work, Southpark and some JibJab stuff. I was also inspired by the demo illustrations in the Zelda game Phantom Hourglass (the gallery section).

Design decisions should be based on function. I had to elongate the legs for the characters to be able to ride bicycles.

The customer thought it to be too kiddie style (again!), so I opted for a more “adult” or neutral look, and ended up with:

The three of us working on these films – Alfred Gunnarsson, Niklas Ström and me – call ourselves AnimationsbyrÃ¥n. We’ll launch our new website shortly. We just completed the Cykelsuperstier infomercial. You can watch it here.

Citylogistik

Studio Qassim takes a new turn with this animated information film for the Copenhagen municipality project Citylogistik. The project aims to replace heavy transport in the inner city with more environmental friendly alternatives.

The film is basically hand drawn, but animated in Flash. It was edited in Premiere and After Effects. The cut out paper collage coloring of the backgrounds were made in Photoshop.

The film was made in collaboration with Alfred Gunnarsson and Niklas Ström. Alfred designed the website and logo for Citylogistik. We were both involved in shaping the script for the film together with our friends at the Copenhagen municipality. I designed, storyboarded and animated the film. Niklas did the outstanding sound work. In fact, the three of us had so much fun doing this project that we will definitely work togheter again. We’re currently in the process of forming our own animation bureau, and we’re already in the talks for our next project. I’ll let you know once we’re up and running.

Big thanks to Johan Rünow at S8AN Communication for helping us out with After Effects!

Karl-Bertil och Per Ã…hlin

I’m a member of Svenska Tecknare, a kind of union for Swedish cartoonists, illustrators, comic artists, animators etc. December 6 we had our annual meeting in Malmö Form/Design Center amidst the exhibition “En bit av mig”, displaying samples from 50 years of feature film animation by Per Ã…hlin, a living legend in Swedish animation.

Special guest (and also member of the organisation) was none other than the grand old man himself, and his long time collaborator Pelle Svensson who curated the exhibition. I took some crappy iPhone pictures and put togeher a little something to pay tribute to the humble master. The soundtrack is me playing the theme of Karl-Bertil Jonsson’s Julafton, Per Ã…hlin’s and Tage Danielsson’s classic short film, shown by Swedish television every christmas eve since 1975. The title photo of the film was taken 11 years ago, when I interviewed Per for the Växjö youth magazine Zalt. Unfortunately, I don’t think he remembered this momentous event…

The music was written by Gunnar Svensson (1920-1995) and played originally by another legend, Swedish saxophone player Arne “Dompan” Domnérus (1924-2008), compared to whom I’m just a simple amateur. Our version was recored at Lund’s Stadsteater 27 Nov at Bobbe Big Band’s All That Jazz – a Christmas Jubilee, a concert celebrating Bobbe Big Band’s 5 years of existence, with symphonic extension and a gospel choir (!). Peter Isberg and Martin Nilsson at Sonatina did a great job recording us. Thanks guys!

If you happen to be in the neighbourhood of Form/Design Center, the Per Ã…hlin exhibition “En bit av mig” is on until 9 Jan 2011. Thank you Per Ã…hlin for all your wonderful characters and stories through the years! And to all of you, God Jul & Gott Nytt Ã…r! See you next year!

Pimped Dialogue Clip for Reel

My 3D showreel is almost there. This is the final clip to be refurbished. It came from a two week dialogue course with veteran Pixar animator Rich Quade. Rich was Directing Animator on Toy Story, and he animated on Toy Story 3, which will be out any day now in Sweden (can’t wait!). The voice of the clip belongs to Vincent Gallo from the movie Buffalo 66. The refurbished version includes polishing of the facial expressions, adding surfaces and lights to the scene, and further developing the escaped convict’s dialogue partner…
